You start a cycle, hear the dishwasher drain for 30 seconds — then silence. No rush of water. No fill. The machine sits there, and your dirty dishes stay dirty.
A dishwasher not filled with water is one of the most common service calls we handle across Los Angeles. In most cases it comes down to one of five things, and at least two you can fix yourself in under five minutes.
Quick answer: The five most common causes are a stuck float switch, a failed or clogged water inlet valve, a door latch or door switch problem, a closed or kinked water supply line, and — least common — a faulty control board. Work through them in order, starting with the easiest.
We repair dishwashers across Los Angeles every week, from Sherman Oaks to Pasadena. This guide shares what we actually see on the job.
Check These Symptoms First
Match what you are hearing and seeing to the table below before opening any panels or calling anyone.
What You’re Seeing or Hearing | Most Likely Cause |
| Dishwasher starts, tub stays completely dry | Supply valve closed or door latch not engaged |
| Dishwasher hums during fill phase but no water enters | Failed water inlet valve (solenoid dead) |
| Dishwasher drains normally, then never fills | Stuck float switch |
| Fills briefly, then stops mid-cycle | Float switch or control board |
| START/RESUME light flashing, won’t begin | Door latch not fully engaged |
| Error code on display | See brand error code table below |
Find your symptom, jump to that section. You don’t need to read every cause.
Before You Start — Safety Steps
- Unplug or switch off the breaker before opening any access panels.
- Turn off the water supply under the sink before touching valves or hoses.
- Stop immediately if you smell burning, see active leaks, or hear repeated loud buzzing.
- Applies to all brands: Bosch, Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, GE, KitchenAid, Maytag, Frigidaire.
Cause 1 — Stuck Float Switch
Difficulty: Easy — most homeowners fix this in 5 minutes
The float is a small plastic dome in the front corner of the tub. As water fills, it rises and trips a switch that stops the inlet valve. If it gets stuck in the raised position — due to food debris, a bottle cap, or mineral scale — the dishwasher thinks the tub is already full and never lets water in.
How to identify it:
- Dishwasher drains normally but never transitions to filling
- Float feels stiff or won’t move when you press it down
How to fix it:
- Open the door and locate the float dome in the front corner of the tub.
- Press it down — it should move freely and produce a quiet click.
- Check underneath for debris: bottle caps, food wrappers, hardened detergent.
- Remove debris and clean the area with a damp cloth.
- Run a test cycle. If it fills, done.
- If the float moves freely but still no fill → test the float switch with a multimeter for continuity. No reading means the switch needs replacement.
When to call Safro: Float is cracked, or switch shows no continuity. Float switch repair in LA runs $80–$150 total.
From our technicians: This is the #1 cause we see in LA homes, especially units over five years old. Hard water mineral buildup around the float base is extremely common here — it slowly cements the float in the raised position. If you haven’t descaled in over a year, start here.
Cause 2 — Failed or Clogged Water Inlet Valve
Difficulty: Moderate — requires basic tools and comfort with electrical testing
The water inlet valve is an electrically controlled gate behind the bottom kickplate. When the fill cycle starts, the control board sends voltage to the solenoid, which opens the gate. It fails two ways: the mesh screen clogs with sediment, or the solenoid coil burns out.
How to identify it:
- Dishwasher hums during the fill phase but no water enters
- Supply is on, float moves freely, door is latched — still no water
How to fix it:
- Unplug the dishwasher and turn off the water supply.
- Remove the bottom kickplate (two screws).
- Locate the inlet valve where the supply line connects.
- Inspect the mesh screen — clean with a soft brush if clogged with sediment.
- Test the solenoid with a multimeter. A working solenoid reads 500–1,500 ohms. No reading means the valve is dead and needs replacement. Valves are brand-specific — confirm your model number before ordering.
Repair cost: Parts $20–$80. Professional repair in Los Angeles $100–$180 total.
When to call Safro: Solenoid is dead, valve is corroded, or you’re not comfortable with electrical testing. For dishwasher repair in Los Angeles, we carry common inlet valve parts for all major brands.
Cause 3 — Door Latch or Door Switch Problem
Difficulty: Easy-to-moderate
The dishwasher won’t fill unless it detects the door is fully closed. The physical latch clicks the door shut. The door switch behind the control panel sends the “closed” signal to the board. If either fails, the machine stays in a pre-fill state.
How to identify it:
- START/RESUME light is flashing
- Dishwasher drains but stops before filling
- Door doesn’t produce a firm click when closed
How to fix it:
- Close the door firmly until you hear a distinct click.
- Check no dish or rack is blocking full closure.
- Inspect the latch for visible cracks or misalignment.
- If the latch looks intact but the problem continues → test the door switch with a multimeter. No continuity when latched means replacement is needed.
When to call Safro: Switch replacement requires panel removal, or the latch assembly is damaged. Door latch repairs run $90–$160 in Los Angeles.
Cause 4 — Closed or Kinked Water Supply Line
Difficulty: Very easy — check this before everything else
Your dishwasher connects to water via a supply line from a shutoff valve under the sink. If that valve is even partially closed, no water reaches the inlet valve regardless of every other component.
How to identify it:
- Absolutely no water at all, not even briefly
- Kitchen faucet pressure also seems lower than usual
- You recently had plumbing work or reorganized the under-sink cabinet
How to fix it:
- Open the cabinet under the sink.
- Find the dishwasher shutoff valve — turn it fully counterclockwise to open.
- Trace the supply hose for any sharp kinks — straighten carefully.
- Run a test cycle.
When to call Safro: Supply valve is corroded and won’t turn, or the line is cracked and leaking.
From our technicians: This is the first thing we check on any no-fill call. We regularly find someone bumped the valve while cleaning under the sink. The whole fix takes two minutes. Always check this first.
Cause 5 — Faulty Control Board
Difficulty: Advanced — do not attempt without professional equipment
The control board sends 120V to the inlet valve solenoid at the start of every fill cycle. If the relay controlling this output burns out, the valve never receives power — even if the valve itself is perfectly fine. This is the least common cause and only appears after everything else is ruled out.
How to identify it:
- All other components test fine — float moves, solenoid reads correct ohms, supply is open, door latches — but still no fill
- Visible burn marks or swollen capacitors on the board
- Persistent burnt electronics smell from inside the door
- Error code that won’t clear after unplugging and resetting
Repair details: Control board diagnosis requires measuring live voltage at the inlet valve terminals during a fill cycle. Do not probe live terminals yourself. Parts cost $80–$250. Total repair in Los Angeles $200–$400.
When to call Safro: Any time you suspect the control board. We confirm it’s actually the problem before replacing — it’s the most expensive component and worth verifying first. Call(747) 250-6879.
Brand-Specific Error Codes
If your dishwasher has a digital display, look up your error code here before touching anything.
Brand | Error Code | What It Means | Where to Start |
| Bosch | E15 | Flood sensor triggered — water in base tray | Check under unit for leak; tilt forward to drain base |
| Bosch | E24 | Drain issue blocking fill cycle | Check drain hose, filter, drain pump |
| Samsung | 4C / 4E | Water supply error | Check supply valve, then inlet valve screen |
| LG | IE / 1E | Water inlet error | Check supply pressure, then inlet valve solenoid |
| Whirlpool / Maytag | F8 E1 | Long fill — water too slow to reach sensor | Check supply valve, inlet valve, float switch |
| Whirlpool / Maytag | F8 E4 | No fill detected | Same as F8 E1 — start with supply valve |
| GE / Profile | No dedicated fill code | Run built-in diagnostics | Check manual for button sequence |
| KitchenAid | Same as Whirlpool | Shared platform | Follow Whirlpool steps |
| Frigidaire | i30 / i20 | Overfill or water detection error | Check float switch and flood sensor |
To reset an error code: Unplug for 5 minutes, plug back in, run a cycle. If the code returns immediately, the underlying problem is still active.

Prevention Tips
Monthly: Rinse the filter at the bottom of the tub. A fully clogged filter leaves standing water, which the float switch detects as “full” and blocks the next fill cycle.
Every 6 months: Press the float switch. It should drop freely and click. Clean the base if stiff.
Annually: Check the supply hose under the sink for kinks or corrosion.
Hard water (all of LA): Run a descaler cycle every three months. LA water is hard — mineral deposits accumulate inside the inlet valve screen and around the float base faster than in softer-water areas. A cup of white vinegar in the bottom rack helps; a dedicated dishwasher descaler works better. This single habit prevents the majority of fill problems we see in LA.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q1: Why is my dishwasher running but no water is coming in?
Usually a stuck float switch, a closed supply valve, or a failed inlet valve. Press the float in the front corner — it should drop freely and click. If it moves freely and the supply valve is open, the inlet valve solenoid is the next suspect.
Q2: My dishwasher hums but won’t fill — what does that mean?
Humming during fill almost always means a failed water inlet valve. The solenoid is receiving power but the coil has burned out or the screen is clogged with sediment. One of the most frequent dishwasher repairs we do in Los Angeles.
Q3: Can a clogged filter cause no fill?
Yes, indirectly. A blocked filter leaves water from the previous cycle in the tub. The float switch detects it as full and blocks the next fill cycle. Clean the filter first.
Q4: Is it worth repairing a dishwasher that won’t fill?
Usually yes for units under 8–10 years old. Float switch repair is $80–$150. Inlet valve is $100–$180 — far less than a new dishwasher at $400–$600. We give a free estimate and a straight answer either way.
Q5: How long does a repair take?
Float switch, inlet valve, and door latch repairs take 30–60 minutes. Same-day service across Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and Pasadena. Call (747) 250-6879.
Q6: Which brands have the most fill problems?
From our LA service calls: Samsung and LG most often for inlet valve issues (4C, IE codes). Bosch commonly triggers E15. Whirlpool and GE float switch problems are frequent in units over 7 years old with LA hard water.
